Benedict Cumberbatch gives a magnificent performance in this searing western set in early 1920s Montana. Charismatic, severe and brutal, rancher Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in all who cross his path. When Phil’s mild-mannered brother George (Jesse Plemons) marries a widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and she moves into the family ranch Phil treats her with unrelenting cruelty. But when her awkward teenage son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) returns to the ranch during his school holidays Phil appears to take the boy under his wing …
