The Quiet Girl (12A) at Number 8, Pershore
This delicate drama set in rural Ireland in 1981 follows Cáit (Catherine Clinch) a shy nine-year-old girl who is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to stay with distant relatives for the summer. After sun-dappled days spent milking cows, peeling potatoes and fetching water from the well, the initially uncommunicative child starts to open up to her foster parents. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one.
Based on the novella Foster by Claire Keegan. Directed by Colm Bairéad.
“This beautiful and compassionate film … is a child’s-eye look at our fallen world; already it feels to me like a classic … It is a jewel.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
